What’s a Bulging Disc?

Your spine is made up of vertebrae separated by discs—flexible cushions made of cartilage that absorb shock and keep your spine moving smoothly. When those discs start to bulge outward, the pressure can irritate nearby nerves and create serious pain, stiffness, or numbness.

A bulging disc is not the same as a herniated disc. With a bulging disc, the outer layer stretches. With a herniated disc, it cracks, and the inner material leaks out. Both hurt. Both can cause nerve issues. But a bulging disc often develops slowly—and is easier to treat if caught early.

Symptoms of a Bulging Disc

Many people blow it off as “normal back pain” until it gets worse. Don’t ignore it if you notice:

  • Pain in the neck or back that radiates into the arms or legs
  • Pain that gets worse when sitting, bending, or lifting
  • Discomfort when coughing, sneezing, or making sudden movements
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in hands, feet, or limbs
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion

These are all red flags that a disc may be pressing on a nerve.

What Causes Bulging Discs?

Bulging discs often come from repetitive strain, poor posture, or just wear and tear over time. Common risk factors include:

  • Aging (especially over 30)
  • Excess body weight
  • Sitting too long or poor posture
  • Smoking (it speeds up disc breakdown)
  • Physically demanding work
  • Lack of core strength or flexibility

How We Treat Bulging Discs — Without Surgery or Meds

At Faulkenberry Chiropractic, we use non-invasive, drug-free treatments that relieve pain and help fix the actual problem—so you don’t end up on the operating table.

🔹 Spinal Decompression

Gently stretches the spine to relieve pressure on the disc and surrounding nerves. It creates space for the disc to retract and rehydrate—reducing pain and improving movement.

🔹 Chiropractic Adjustments

Re-aligns the spine to take pressure off bulging discs and allow better nerve function and motion.

🔹 Laser Therapy

Reduces inflammation, speeds up tissue healing, and calms nerve irritation—painless and no downtime.

🔹 Rehab & Mobility Exercises

Targeted stretches and strengthening exercises stabilize the spine and reduce the risk of re-injury.

Stop Letting Disc Pain Control Your Life

Bulging discs don’t always require surgery—but they do require treatment. If you catch the problem early, you can recover faster and avoid long-term damage.
